Most US cities are served by more than one route option, especially between major hubs. Compare nonstop availability against connecting options on price and total travel time before deciding which fits your schedule better.

Larger metro areas often have two or three airports within reasonable driving distance. Checking all of them for your travel dates, rather than defaulting to the biggest one, can turn up a shorter drive or a better fare.

A direct flight removes connection risk, but if it departs at an inconvenient time, a well-timed connecting flight through a nearby hub is often a reasonable trade-off — just build in a realistic buffer for the connection.
